If you have ever browsed through our Circle of Strength Workshop Series, you might have wondered why I included a workshop on understanding your poop and digestive system. What does this have to do with self care, discovery and improvement? Why would I want to have a whole lecture about a topic that most would find disgusting or taboo?
Well, it all started when I was first diagnosed with cancer back in the fall of 2018. I was put on a series of medications that helped with my pain but had some side effects. One of the major ones was that I was extremely constipated. Before this, I had never really thought about how my digestive health contributed to my overall quality of life. But in a matter of days, it became one of my primary thoughts and worries. It became a topic I discussed not just with my nurses and doctors, but with my husband, son and friends.
I learned a lot throughout that time of how much your stool can be a marker for your overall health and wanted to share that information with others. I also wanted to reduce the stigma around talking about digestive health. As that fear of asking questions could keep women from getting the help that they need and might make them ignore signs that there is a major issue.
Here is a little trip down memory lane of my time in the hospital and some of the videos we made about my struggle with constipation. I hope they make you smile. If you would like to learn more about your digestive health, check out the I Am My Poop Workshop.
