Showing yourself as an ally, who is willing to listen without judgement or pressure, can make all of the difference in the world to someone living with addiction. For those who are facing their addiction for the first time or those who might have relapsed, coming forward can be a terrifying thing. Addiction thrives on isolation and shame we need to create a culture where those who suffer feel supported enough to ask for help.
In his Rat Park experiment, Dr. Bruce Alexander examined the impacts of environmental factors on addiction, with rats as participants. The results suggested that the rats placed with others were significantly less likely to get addicted to drugs compared with those caged alone. Thus, concluding that a connection with others can be an antithesis to addiction. (Psychology Today)
