Bears are beautiful animals, but for most of us the thought of encountering a bear is more frightening than exciting. In fact, throughout history North American brown bears were often so feared by Indigenous peoples that they rarely hunted them. On average, adult grizzly bears weigh between 400 and 800 lbs. If you do happen to encounter a bear while hiking or camping, the best thing to do is keep your distance, stay calm and move slowly.
